I’ve been hearing good things about So Good Restaurant and their ability to do gluten-free for a long time now. Last week, I finally decided to go investigate over dinner. I asked the server if they could accommodate me, and she told me to simply pick whatever I wanted from their extensive menu, and then she’d tell me if it could be made gluten-free. My buddy and I settled on the Fried Tofu with Pepper-Salt (this was a bit of a test as I knew it was breaded), and the Wu Se Vegetables. Turns out both dishes could be made gluten-free! Awesome!
At the end of the evening, I had a nice chat with the owner, Peter. He told me that he was professionally trained as a nurse, so he is very familiar with the dietary requirements of celiacs. He spoke with pride about how he’s been able to accommodate celiacs for a number of years, with no reported problems. Great to hear!
But, how was the food, you ask? Well, awesome! The Fried Tofu with Pepper-Salt was highly addictive. Mmm! It was kinda like popcorn chicken, but made with tofu instead! The gluten-free version is breaded in corn starch rather than wheat flour. I think I ate ¾ of the plate, to my friend’s dismay. (Bwahaha!) The Wu Se Vegetables were also very delicious! They were glazed in peanut sauce, with just the right amount of spiciness. YUM!
So Good is a casual spot with generous portion sizes, and very reasonable prices (Wu Se Vegetables: $8.95, Fried Tofu with Pepper-Salt: $8.95). I highly recommend it for a cozy, unpretentious dinner out. They also do take-out! Just don’t eat the fortune cookies…

I've been to So Good only once, but loved it! Peter is quite the character - what a friendly guy. I had no idea he has a nursing background! Very cool.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it.
I went with my husband and parents to So Good this past Saturday (Nov. 21st). My father and I are both Celiacs. We picked out a bunch of stuff and then Peter went through it and told us what we could and couldn't have until we had a bunch of dishes. We had rice, green beans with pork, General Tso chicken, Chicken with Pineapple and Peppers, Broccoli with Ginger and Lemon grass and something Peter recommended that had some kind of peanut stuff on it (also chicken).
ReplyDeleteIt was all very delicious BUT (the big but) the next day my father and I both had reactions to it. I don't know what went wrong but there was definitely gluten in there! I'm so dissapointed as I was really looking forward to going there again!
Hi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm SO sorry to hear you had a bad experience at So Good! I know a lot of people have had good experiences, so I am very disappointed to hear this. Hopefully, they can make some changes to maintain a certain assurance that there won't be cross contamination with other meals.
Thanks for sharing!
Another great Chinese restaurant where they are very careful about cooking gluten free is New Hong Shing. Though not in Centertown, it is family owned, and probably the best Chinese food in all of Ottawa.

I have been to So Good a few times but never again. Peter gets it but the English abilities of his staff are so poor that things get screwed up. I will not go back.
ReplyDeletePeter helped us find five safe dishes to eat and my sensitive daughter with celiac disease has no negative response. Highlights were a platter of spring roll ingredients (with that yummy pepper tofu) and got to make our own rolls and dip them in sauces that were g-free, a peanut chicken dish, and a very yummy fried beef in a g-free coating.
